"This position is located in the Office of External Affairs, External Relations, Consumer Health Information Staff. The Consumer Health Information staff is responsible for creating, executing and overseeing all consumer health information activities for the FDA.

Duties:

  • Serves as a senior writer-editor and exercises independent judgment and initiative in creating a variety of consumer-oriented materials as required in support of public information and consumer education programs on a nationwide basis, including Consumer Updates, which can be found on FDA's website at http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/default.htm.
  • Coordinates the writing and disseminating of quickly produced Consumer Updates in conjunction with major agency announcements, including situations in which public health may be at risk
  • Assists with establishing and maintaining partnerships with external organizations and conducting other activities to increase the reach of FDA consumer health information.
  • Researches, conducts interviews, organizes, writes, revises, and clears written materials through the highest levels of the agency under constant deadline pressure, which may require working outside of normal business hours.
  • Translates complex terms and language into narratives easily understandable to the general public (which is assumed to have no more than a high school education).
  • Collaborates with the staff's Visual Information Specialists regarding editorial presentation of graphic materials.
  • Recommends topics to be covered and exercises editorial judgment regarding the content of materials. Loads and maintains web pages in the agency's automated content management system"
