This piece looks at the only majority-black nursing home in Illinois that earned the highest possible rating from Nursing Home Compare. The home is also noteworthy because it received that mark while having more than 85 percent of resident care paid for by Medicaid.

Maria Morfin is the acting administrator for the Sacramento County Alcohol and Drug Services Division. She has over 25 years of experience working in the substance abuse and mental health fields. She has been with Sacramento County for nine years; before that, she worked in a variety of community-based organizations, in Napa and Solano counties, and for the state Department of Health Services.

The Center for Health Journalism’s 2023 National Fellowship will provide $2,000 to $10,000 reporting grants, five months of mentoring from a veteran journalist, and a week of intensive training at USC Annenberg in Los Angeles from July 16-20. The Center for Health Journalism’s 2023 Symposium on Domestic Violence provides reporters with a roadmap for covering this public health epidemic with nuance and sensitivity. The next session will be offered virtually on Friday, March 31.
