“We want to ensure that our kiddos that rely on the school year’s food get fed during the summer time,” she said. “We’ve seen and we know which kids sometimes don’t get meals when the weekend comes.”

Last August, Kanawha County school cooks were abruptly ordered to quit serving prepackaged food and cook instead, from scratch, with fresh ingredients, five days a week. With fewer students eating, Kanawha County's food program is projected to make about $350,000 less than it did the previous year.

Choicelunch, one of a handful of private companies that provide school lunches in the Bay Area, has helped Havens Elementary meet parent demand for nutritious and tasty foods produced in a sustainable manner. It has also helped with another of the parents’ goals: turning the lunch program into a profit center.
