Almost 50 years ago, a notorious church bombing in Birmingham, Ala. killed two of Fania Davis's closest friends—and launched Davis, then a teenager, into a lifetime of social justice work. Today, the well-known Oakland resident directs Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth (RJOY), an innovative organization that aims to turn teenagers accused of crimes or troublemaking into responsible citizens.
Alex Briscoe was appointed director of the Alameda County Health Care Services Agency in January 2010. Previously he served as the agency's deputy director. Before joining the county, he was the director of the Chappell Hayes Health Center at McClymonds High School in West Oakland. The Chappell Hayes Health Center is a satellite outpatient center of Children's Hospital and Research Center at Oakland.
