Sharen Carey is executive director of the Big Sur Health Center, an independent, nonprofit, community health care facility serving Monterey County residents. The Big Sur Health Center was founded in 1979 by a determined physician, a nurse and several dedicated volunteers. Since inception the Big Sur Health Center has been and continues to be the only facility south of Carmel and north of Hearst Castle and Cambria -- almost 100 miles of rugged coast.

Jeannie Cordero is codirector of the Blind and Visually Impaired Center of Monterey County, or BVIC, a nonprofit agency providing free services to visually impaired Monterey County residents since 1971. Through its outreach program, instructors visit clients in their everyday surroundings of home, work and school.

Dr. Hugh Stallworth is the health officer for Monterey County. In this state-appointed role, he works closely with the Monterey County Health Department to ensure the health of county residents. His responsibilities include technical, scientific and medical oversight of all county public health programs. As the county's health officer, he also enforces regulations, statutes and rules prescribed by the California Department of Health.
