Biography

Ed Penhoet is a board member and former president of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, a grant-making organization that funds projects related to environmental conservation and science in the San Francisco Bay Area. The veteran biotech leader also serves as vice chairman of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the state's stem cell agency. Previously, Penhoet served as dean of the School of Public Health at the UC Berkeley. In 1981, he co-founded Chiron Corp. and served as its chief executive officer until 1998. For 10 years prior to founding Chiron, Penhoet was a faculty member of the biochemistry department at UC Berkeley. Penhoet has served as chairman of the California Health Care Institute, of the Chabot Space and Science Center, and of the San Francisco Bay Area Bioscience Center. He is a board member of Renovis Inc., ZymoGenetics Inc., and Chiron. He is a member of the federal Institute of Medicine of the National Academies and of the American Society of Biological Chemists, and he has published more than 50 scientific articles and papers. Penhoet earned his undergraduate degree in biology from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Washington. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of California, San Diego.
