Biography

Dr. Francesca M. Gany is the founder and director of the Center for Immigrant Health, a network of more than 1,000 community members, social scientists, health care and public health professionals. Gany, a faculty member of the New York University School of Medicine, has extensive background in immigrant health research and policy development. She teaches primary care and immigrant health, along with health policy and medical economics. She has served as the principal investigator on a number of pioneering immigrant health projects, including a study that changed the way immigrants are screened for tuberculosis. She also developed the National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health-funded Cancer Awareness Network for Immigrant and Minority Populations, which responds to disparities in how Haitian, Latino, Chinese, Korean and English-speaking Caribbean immigrants seek out and undergo cancer prevention, detection and treatment services. Gany spearheaded a medical interpreter project in New York that led to development of the Remote Simultaneous Medical Interpretation System. Gany also researches the impact of interpreting on the medical interview, on medical errors, on medical outcomes and on health care costs. She holds a B.S. in biology from Yale University, an M.D. from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York and a M.S. in health policy from NYU's Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. She is board-certified in internal medicine.
