Biography
Kathryn Pitkin Derose is a researcher at RAND Health, a division of the RAND Corporation, the nation's largest independent health policy research program, with a broad research portfolio that focuses on topics including health care quality, costs and delivery. She is currently principal investigator on a multi‐year, National Institutes of Health (NIH)‐funded study on urban congregations' capacity for HIV Prevention and care. In 2005, the NIH honored her with a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the nation's highest honor for professionals at the outset of their independent research careers, providing her with the funding to continue this research. Derose came to RAND in 1994 to be a full‐time project director of a five‐year randomized trial of church‐based mammography promotion in Los Angeles County. A few years later, she enrolled in the Ph.D. program in health services at UCLA and continued to work part‐time at RAND until she completed her degree in 2003. She then accepted a full‐time position in December 2003. Derose has a B.A. in Latin American studies from Duke University, an M.P.H. in population and family health from UCLA, and a Ph.D.in health services from UCLA.
