Biography
Gay youth are at risk for the most difficult challenges in the lives of youth today -- suicide, victimization and substance abuse. Dr. Stephen Russell, a professor in Family Studies and Human Development at the University of Arizona, is studying why gay youth are at risk. His research focuses on understanding the school, family and friendships of gay youth to better understand why some are at risk and why many are not. As of 2010, he was the president-elect of the Society for Research on Adolescents. Previously, he was a specialist in teenage sexuality at UC Davis and director of the 4-H Center for Youth Development. He also headed the \"Bridge for Adolescent Pregnancy, Parenting and Sexuality,\" a national network that addresses adolescent pregnancy, parenting and sexuality in communities across the United States.
