Journalists from big name organizations better move over. The notebook or microphone next to you at medical conferences is now likely to be in the hand of someone living with the diagnosis being discussed.

I had the opportunity to go behind the scenes of ABC's The View this week. I was a guest on what turned out to be a historic news day: The morning after the President announced Osama Bin Laden had been killed in a daring raid. When I had heard the news the night before I thought my segment, discussing my new book, The Web-Savvy Patient, would be bumped.

It’s happening several times a day now. “My friend may have a brain tumor.” “I have been short of breath.” “What do you think I should do?” I am not a doctor, but people are increasingly looking to me as if I were one. It’s a little daunting.
