About Myself:
I am currently a grants manager at Survivors of Torture, International.
I began freelance reporting on public health and social justice issues, as a response to consistent local and national research/surveys showing that Filipinos as well as other Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHOPI) communities: 1) lacked "user-friendly" knowledge on critical public health issues affecting their communities, 2) lacked adequate funding for culturally and linguistically competent prevention, intervention and aftercare programs, and 3) remained an "at risk" community due to the aforementioned.
I have more than 23 years of experience in culturally and linguistically competent community service which focused on public health issues such as: Filipino Teen Suicide Prevention, Gang Prevention and Intervention, Substance Abuse Prevention, Problem Gambling, Teen Relationship Violence, and Using Cultural Strengths and Beliefs as a Coping Mechanism. Aside from boards and commissions, I am a past recipient of The California Wellness Foundation Violence Prevention Fellowship.
I covered a variety of public health focused stories including, but not limited to primary health and behavioral health issues, social justice, policy and advocacy. The sponsoring news agency for my National Health Journalism Fellowship was the San Diego based Filipino Press.
