About Myself:

I currently cover healthcare and (depending on what's going on) breaking news for the Record Searchlight, the daily newspaper for Redding, Calif.

I have worked at the Record Searchlight since graduating from the University of Oregon in the summer of 2010. I originally covered county government for the paper, shifting to the healthcare beat in November 2013.

Before that, I interned at The Springfield Times, the weekly newsaper for Springfield, Ore., and simultaneously worked as a writer and editor-in-chief for a satirical publication at the University of Oregon.

Quarterly Best of Scripps - awarded by EW Scripps Company

I am a three-time winner of the quarterly Best of Scripps awards, a competition among the company's 15 newspapers nationwide. I have won the award once for Best Watchdog Reporting and twice for Best Deadline Reporting.

Lesson: For series on mental illness, lack of data becomes part of the story

In reporting her series on mental illness in Shasta County, Alayna Shulman didn't find the data she was hoping for. Instead, she highlighted that lack of data in her story. It was one of several lessons she took away from working on the project.
