About Myself:
David Olmos has focused on health issues as a writer and editor for more than 15 years. He currently is Editorial Director for WebMD and Medscape, where he oversees a team of 22 editors and reporters. He is based in Portland, Oregon for Bloomberg News in San Francisco. He was editor of the Los Angeles Times' award-winning Health section from 1998 to 2005. Previously he covered health care for the Times' Business section for five years, during which time he was a co-finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in explanatory reporting for a five-part series on managed health care in California that led to state legislative hearings about regulatory oversight of HMOs and spurred demands for changes in a major health plan's arbitration system for settling patients' lawsuits. He worked as the communications director for the California Healthcare Foundation, a nonprofit philanthropy focusing on health policy, from 2005-07. As a consultant, Olmos developed a proposal for a nonprofit journalism organization focusing on California health care issues that provided a model for a pilot project at USC's Annenberg School of Communication. In 2007 he received a global health fellowship from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation for a reporting project about HIV/AIDS prevention in Belize, producing a video for CurrentTV.
