Kicking off our 22nd year with gratitude and a new home
This month we celebrate the 22nd year of the USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism.

I founded the Center in 2004. It was initially known as The California Endowment Health Journalism Fellowships after our founding funder. It offered health journalism training to approximately 100 California journalists a year. Today, we have a national footprint and train and support thousands of journalists across the country each year through our fellowships and grants, reporting collaboratives, symposiums and webinar series
Celebrate our 22nd year with a $22 donation
Our remarkable journey has been even more evident in recent weeks, as our team prepares to go “back to school.” For many years, our offices have been located in the eaved top floor of a more than century-old English Revival Tudor just off campus on Adams Blvd., known as Kerckhoff Hall, designed by architects Sumner Hunt, Abraham Wesley Eager, and Silas Reese Burns.

This fall, we are moving to another singular building, this time on the USC campus: the Annenberg School for Communication building, designed by midcentury modern firm A. Quincy Jones & Associates.

While packing up, our team was inspired by many treasures from our past, including copies of ground-breaking stories that changed state and federal laws while investigating the intersection of health and equity, in health care systems, schools, workplaces and justice systems. We also enjoyed seeing early issues of Boyle Heights Beat, a celebrated community news project reported by youth that we launched and operated for a decade in collaboration with La Opinion’s Pedro Rojas.

In the year ahead in our new space, we are as committed as ever to nurture reporting that galvanizes communities and spurs the dismantling of structural barriers to health and well-being.
