health care reform and health policy
I am working in health policy and communications at Health Access, the nonprofit advocacy coalition in Sacramento that reports on everything from legislative and state budget action to political trends and health care reform -- all with a focus on health care, of course. I've been the medical and science editor on the Sacramento Bee metro desk, a state capitol correspondent for the Los Angeles Times (whose coverage included investigative work on hospital seismic safety and special interest contributions to state officials), the Editor of the California Journal policy and politics monthly magazine, an assistant metro editor and assistant state editor at the Los Angeles Times, a state editor at the Dallas Times Herald, a visiting professor of multimedia in Lima, Peru, at the Universidad de Ciencias Applicadas Peruana, a Knight International Journalism fellow, a Kaiser Family Foundation journalism fellow, and have shared in Pulitzer Prizes in breaking news at the Los Angeles Times, as well as the Sigma Delta Chi excellence in journalism award for co-editing an immigration special section at the Dallas Times Herald. I was also accepted as a CEHJF fellow....and I think covering health care has gotten to be a very exciting enterprise that will be tops in usefulness to readers and policy-makers alike for some time to come. I am digging in deep, and finding many, many ideas and compelling topics. As someone who also completed a graphic design and multimedia certificate program at UC Davis Extension, I can also see quite a lot of potential for integrating multimedia into telling health care stories. And I'm very happy to find this website -- what a wonderful resource it will be.
