P. Mona Khanna, M.D., MPH, FACP, FACPM is a triple board-certified physician and Emmy award-winning medical journalist who serves as a Medical Contributor and Visiting Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Illinois. She is the only medical doctor alumna inducted into the Medill School of Journalism Hall of Achievement at Northwestern University. After completing three medical specialty residencies, she worked her way up as a medical reporter, from the 161st-largest television market of Palm Springs, CA, to the 5th largest television market of Dallas-Fort Worth before returning to her hometown of Chicago, the 3rd largest television market. She typically fields 25 weekly email, social media, phone, organizational, in-person and faxed health story ideas from friends, professional acquaintances, business developers, marketers, public information officers, promoters, press relations staff and public relations workers. She knows how to get the attention of the press and how to turn them off. For her leadership in educating and empowering people across the globe through television, radio, magazine, newspaper and online heath reports, Dr. Mona has received almost 50 honors this past decade, including 5 Emmy Award nominations. Most recently, she is the recipient of the Chicago Foundation for Women’s 2012 “Breaking Barriers” Award, 2012 Oscar E. Edwards Memorial Award for Volunteerism and Community Service from the American College of Physicians, 2012 Institute of Medicine of Chicago’s Global Health Humanitarian Award, 2010 Illinois Woman’s Press Association Reporting Award, 2010 Communicator’s Award of Distinction, and the 2010 Walter C. Alvarez Award for Excellence in Communicating Health Care Developments to the Public from the American Medical Writer’s Association.
