Fellowships & Awards

USC Annenberg National Health Journalism Fellowship, University of Southern California
Basic Information:  Join us in Los Angeles July 12-16  for an intensive 4 1/2 day journalism institute focusing on vulnerable children and their families and the community conditions that affect their prospects for health. All expenses paid, plus reporting grants of $2,000-$10,000 to underwrite substantive explanatory or investigative journalism on health care reform, community health or children's health, welfare and well-being.

Keeping the Peace, Peacefully, McCormick Specialized Reporting Institute, Chicago
Basic Information: This two-day workshop will arm journalists with facts, analyses and reporting strategies to make their reporting on police community relations matter. Scholars and experts from across the United States will cover issues ranging from race and community relations and police strategies to control violence, to police accountability and the mental health challenges police officers face, on and off the job. The costs of your travel and stay in Chicago for the workshop will be covered. The workshop will be held on Friday, April 24th and Saturday, April 25th at Columbia College Chicago. There will be a brief reception on the evening of Thursday, April 23rd.

Health Journalism 2015: Fellowship, Association of Health Care Journalists
Basic Information: AHCJ, with the support of several health foundations, is able to offer a number of fellowships to journalists for this conference.

Basic Information: The fellowship is a 12-month, multidisciplinary residential program at CTP in Maryland. Fellows will be placed in one of six areas within the CTP: Compliance and Enforcement; Health Communication and Education; Management; Policy; Regulations; or Science. This is an excellent opportunity for exceptional professionals to actively participate in the development of science-based public health strategies, serve as the lead for defined projects, meet with policy leaders, and acquire new knowledge related to tobacco products and their use, which is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States.
Requirements: Exceptional professionals with a minimum of five to seven years of experience are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals of the United States, or have been admitted to the United States for permanent residence and have a valid green card number before applying to the program, and must have an advanced degree in a relevant field.

By the end of 2016, Medicare aims to make 30 percent of payments on the basis of quality or value of care provided rather than the quantity of services. Critics often fault the existing fee-for-service system for rewarding doctors for performing more procedures, and the Department of Health and Human Services is eager to embrace alternatives.

As the largest payer in the U.S. health care system, Medicare wields a huge influence on how health care is paid for and delivered, and this move is expected to trigger larger changes that ripple through the health care system. In this webinar, we'll explore the implications of this massive shift from volume toward value. Our expert panelists will assess the mixed track record of Accountable Care Organizations, which many see as precursors to this change, and discuss other promising innovations for boosting quality while lowering costs.
