I am on USA TODAY's national investigative team and a past president of Investigative Reporters and Editors’ board of directors. I previously wrote a weekly watchdog column called Spotlight for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Prior to the column's debut in October 2008, I covered the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I previously was a member of the Washington-based national investigative team for the Knight Ridder chain of newspapers. Before that I spent 10 years as a reporter and editor at the Detroit Free Press. I also have reported for The Arizona Republic and the Dallas Times Herald.
