I am a news junkie who also likes murder mysteries. As a public health advocate, I serve on the San Francisco Health Commission - appointed by Mayor Ed Lee in 2012. I'm also involved in national health advocacy, such as my work with a national steering committee working to bring oral contraception over-the-counter. Writing is my passion, and I know there's a novel in me somewhere.

When I first began researching the issue of black maternal mortality, I was shocked to learn the high death rates among Black women dying from pregnancy-related complications across the U.S. In California, Black women are dying at four times the rate of White women from pregnancy-related causes.
