Our Mission

We believe in a broad vision of health that focuses on the real-world conditions in which we live our daily lives. For us, journalism is the essential tool for illuminating the lived experiences and humanity of those otherwise left unseen and unheard by broader society. At its best, it can serve as a way to address the impact of structural racism  – and other forms of systemic exclusion and discrimination  – on health and well-being. The Center’s mission is to empower and equip journalists to tell these stories in collaboration with communities – with depth, humility and rigor — not just to spur more enlightened policy or remedy long injustice, but as a means of helping communities to shape their own futures. We seek to broaden our collective understanding of what it means to be part of a healthy community, and how we can get there together.
