Journalism Awards for Health, Education, Child Welfare and Social Justice Reporting

Many previous Fellowship projects have done very well in many journalism competitions.  We urge Fellows to submit their projects to all the competitions that seem appropriate.

Here is a list of noteworthy competitions, along with deadlines:

IRE Awards -- January 11

George Polk Awards -- January 11

AHCJ (multiple categories) -- Deadline is noon CST on January 14 (three Fellows won AHCJ awards in 2018)

Carolyn C. Mattingly Award for Mental Health Reporting-- entries accepted beginning January 19; no deadline specified

Associated Press Media Editors Digital Storytelling Award & Community Engagement Award and others  -- 11:59 EST, January 24 

Worth Bingham Award for Investigative Reporting -- January 25 (2016 National Fellow Carol Marbin Miller won this award in 2018)

Pulitzer Prizes - January 25 (2015 National Fellow Michael LaForgia won in 2016; 2016 National Fellow Carol Marbin Miller was a finalist in 2018)

CNPA (California Newspaper Publishers Association):  California media outlets only.  11:59 p.m. January 28  (numerous Fellows won CNPA awards in 2018)


SPJ Awards --  multiple deadlines (check website). First deadline, Sigma Delta Chi Awards: February 19 
 
 
Evert Clark/Seth Payne Award for Young Science Journalists;  June 30  (applicants must be 30 or under on June 30, 2019)
 
National Press Foundation Awards:  Multiple deadlines; check website 
 
NABJ Salute to Excellence Awards; March 1 (2017 National Fellow Melissa Noel won an NABJ award in 2018)

AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards -- August 1

Editor & Publisher Eppy Awards: mid September (2016 National Fellows Barbara Laker, Wendy Ruderman and Jamie Hopkins won EPPY Awards recently)
 
Education Writers Association -- December 15, 2019 (2016 National Fellow Jamie Hopkins won a top award in 2018)
 
Note:  Most local SPJ chapters and Press Clubs also sponsor journalism awards.
