
Luis Melecio-Zambrano is a journalist covering Cupertino, Milpitas and Sunnyvale for The Mercury News. They previously covered South Santa Clara county as a California Local News Fellow and before that, wrote for Science News, Science, The Monterey Herald and the Santa Cruz Sentinel, among others. Before shifting to journalism, Melecio-Zambrano was a research chemist who holds master’s degrees in science communication and chemistry from UC Santa Cruz and Cornell University, respectively, as well as a bachelor’s in chemistry from Stetson University. Melecio-Zambrano was a Center for Health Journalism 2025 California Health Equity Fellow.
