Makenzie Huber is a lifelong South Dakotan who reports for South Dakota Searchlight on the intersection of politics and policy with health, education, social services and Indigenous affairs. Her work has earned state and regional awards, including South Dakota's Outstanding Young Journalist in 2024. She also was a 2024 finalist for the national Livingston Awards. Titled "Delivering Change," Huber’s Impact Fund project is an investigative series that asks whether the state is repeating a cycle of well-intentioned plans that fail to deliver when it comes to maternal and infant health. It examines whether South Dakota's new five-year maternal and infant health plan will reach the communities that need it most – particularly Native American women and infants who face some of the most severe health disparities in the nation.
