From extreme superbugs to NSFW cancer screening campaigns: welcome to Wednesday's Daily Briefing!

Here's what we're reading and watching today:

Superbug: Even as superbug MRSA is on the decline in many U.S. hospitals, researchers are reporting the emergence of what may be its scarier big brother: NDM-1, which appears to be resistant to almost all antibiotics and is on the rise in India.

Pea Plant: When you eat peas, chew them well and swallow down the right pipe. That's one lesson from this news-of-the-weird story of a Massachusetts man who had a pea plant growing in his lung.

ER: Emergency room visits nationwide rose more than 23 percent from 1997 to 2007 - double what researchers expected considering U.S. population growth, according to a story by San Francisco Chronicle reporter Victoria Colliver that examines a new University of California-San Francisco study. What's happening in your community?

Colon Cancer: This explicit (NSFW?) billboard campaign for colon cancer screening actually has some Washington state drivers getting out of their cars. But is it effective?

RIP Kevan: ReportingonHealth's editor-in-chief, Michelle Levander, has a touching remembrance of Sacramento journalist Kevan Carter, a former California Endowment Health Journalism Fellow who wrote movingly about soul food, African Americans and health.
