Sammy Caiola is a Philadelphia-based independent journalist focused on police accountability, sexual violence and mental health/substance use. She most recently served as the first gun violence prevention reporter for WHYY News in Philadelphia. She is committed to doing trauma-informed journalism driven by the communities she covers. She was a health reporter for eight years, first at The Sacramento Bee and then at Capital Public Radio. Her most recent podcast, "Stop and Frisk: Revisit or Resist," won the 2023 Edward R. Murrow Award for large market radio. Before that her podcast, “After the Assault,” which was produced with the support of the Center for Health Journalism’s 2021 California Impact Fund, explored the journey to justice and healing for survivors of sexual violence. As a 2018 California Fellow and community engagement grantee, she reported a series on suicide in Amador County. She was a 2023 Ochberg Fellow with the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma. She has degrees in journalism and gender studies from Northwestern University and will serve as a 2024 California Health Equity Fellowship Senior Fellow.
