Aitana Vargas is a Columbia University grad and an award-winning news correspondent from Europe based in Los Angeles. In the past ten years, she has covered breaking news, produced investigative series and worked as an on-camera news reporter and live tennis commentator out of Los Angeles. At Columbia University, she worked under the supervision of Professor Rashid Khalidi on a long-form piece about terrorism and the centrality of the Haram al-Sharif in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. She began her career anchoring a weekly local TV show in Spanish while she was still obtaining her BS in Physics (Astrophysics). In her early twenties, she interned in the BBC (London and Manchester), CNN International (Spain), and the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope communications department in Munich (Germany). Since then, her stories have appeared on Público, the LA Times, Narratively, CNN Expansión, Univision, 20minutos, Hoy Los Ángeles, DirecTV Sports Latin America, TVE Internacional, Cuatro TV Network, Telecinco TV Network, CLM TV, HITN TV Network, S Moda and Argentina's Perfil. Aitana's work has been recognized by the LA Press Club multiple times, including for Best Investigative Series, Sports Journalist of the Year, Best Obituary Piece, Best Consumer Story, Best Sports Story and Best Hard News Story. She's also been nominated for the Livingston Award for an exposé she investigated and fully produced on her own, and she received the Berry College Outstanding Young Alumni Award in 2018. Aitana is the granddaughter of Ascensión Mendieta, a symbol of justice for Franco victims worldwide. She's also been hired by Hollywood studios for movie campaigns in Spanish. Aitana was the Spanish-English interpreter for Daniela Vega, lead actress in "A Fantastic Woman," which went on to win the Academy Award in 2018. Vega is the first transgender person in history to become a presenter at the Oscars awards ceremony. Aitana loves to travel the world and has an adorable 12-year-old Siberian Husky.
