Alexa Imani Spencer is a health reporter for Word In Black, where she covers the Black maternal health crisis, mental health, food insecurity and other disparities. A former suburbs and breaking news reporter at The Commercial Appeal, her work also has appeared in USA TODAY, Black Enterprise and other publications. Spencer earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Howard University, where she was selected as a White House Correspondents’ Association scholar, and founded the first student chapter of the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting, a news trade organization dedicated to increasing and retaining reporters and editors of color in the field of investigative reporting. Spencer’s 2023 National Fellowship reporting project will seek to shed light on the health effects of racism on Black Americans.
