I work for the Wild Rivers Outpost, a news website that covers Del Norte County. Previously, I reported for the Del Norte Triplicate, where I was one of two reporters covering a wide variety of beats including education, natural resources, health and tribal issues. I grew up in the Los Angeles area, but have felt more at home covering small towns as I feel everyone deserves access to quality unbiased news. I also feel that reporters in small communities can be held more accountable for their stories by readers because the readers are folks you run into at the local grocery store or post office. Many people in the community I cover also know where I live, so there's that too. You don't have a lot of anonymity covering a small community and that's something I've come to appreciate.I was a 2019 California Fellow.
Roughly three months after its first foray north of the Del Norte County line, Food For People’s Mobile Produce Pantry will become a regular fixture in Klamath.
Don't go into a community, especially one living with generations of trauma, with an agenda or a set of fixed assumptions. Had I done that, I wouldn’t have gotten very far in my reporting.
Food For People’s Mobile Produce Pantry make stops to the outlying areas of Humboldt County as far east as Orleans and as far south as Redway. The program makes a point of visiting areas that don’t have the variety of produce available in more populated areas.
Due to the loss of its Community Development Block Grant dollars on Friday, the pantry gave out bags of cereal, milk, pasta and canned vegetables, Community Food Council Program Director Amanda Hixson said.
Klamath residents will be able to score fresh produce next week courtesy of Food for People.
Though transportation is a barrier for residents trying to feed their families, solving food scarcity in Klamath is more complex than establishing a market in the community, a panel of local native peoples said.
