Katie Shepherd covers politics, government and local news in Montgomery County, Maryland, for The Washington Post's Metro Desk. She previously worked as a National reporter and an overnight reporter for The Post’s Morning Mix team. Before joining The Post, she covered criminal justice and public safety for Willamette Week in Portland, Oregon. She also has written for the Free Lance-Star in Fredericksburg, Virginia, the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and BBC News. For the 2023 National Fellowship, Shepherd will report on how the pandemic affected hospital safety. She’ll aim to uncover the systemic causes that have led to a decline in patient safety in recent years after decades of improvement, and possible solutions to make hospitals safer.
