Kristen Consillio is the health reporter for the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Hawaii's largest daily newspaper.
The national award-winning reporter with a passion for meaningful journalism joined Oahu Publications Inc. in 2007 as part of the business reporting staff of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, which later became the Star-Advertiser. Before that, she worked for seven years at Pacific Business News, an American City Business Journals publication, specializing in health care, among other industries.
Consillio was part of the White House Press Corps covering President Barack Obama in Hawaii and most recently reported from the Big Island on the Kilauea Volcano lava flow threatening the Puna community.
She has been published in the International Herald Tribune and the New York Times and participated in fellowships with the United Nations Foundation, Society of American Business Editors and Writers and Association of Health Care Journalists.
The disaster has been made worse by the number of residents suffering from chronic illnesses and a shortage of doctors.
