Doctors, Hospitals, Ethics
It's all hospitals and doctors in today's Daily Briefing:
Medical Ethics, Reporting Ethics: The Journal Sentinel sued the University of Wisconsin-Madison for emails about a conflict of interest policy for doctors that took effect last year. The emails, recently turned over to the newspaper, expose a rift between doctors who were for and against financial relationships with drug companies. Thomas Sullivan at Policy and Medicine critiques the investigation as a "witch hunt" and says it is "shameful" that "the Sentinel is stealing money from UW that could be used to research and help patients or train doctors."
Snitch: A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that many physicians do not report impairment or incompetence of colleagues. Carolyn Thomas at the Ethical Nag explains the results.
For profit nonprofit? Christina Jewett at California Watch reports on a study that found that CEO pay was more than than charity care spending at 11 nonprofit hospitals.
