The Story Behind the Story: Johanes Rosello Discusses her Series on Family Separation

Reporter Johanes Rosello had covered health and immigration for Atlanta-based Mundo Hispanico for some time when she noticed the health impacts that deportations had on families.

Beyond the obvious effects like economic stability of the family, Rosello noted the emotional and psychological effects that result from the deportation of a family member.

“I’m surprised by children’s reactions – the impacts that it has on the life of a child,” she said. Including physical symptoms.

“Sometimes they don’t want to eat, can’t sleep,” she said. “It’s worrying that these kids are going through this.”
