We know; we're seeking someone special. But we have high standards at the Daily Briefing. It's the Advisory Board's flagship news vehicle and a must-read at thousands of hospitals across the nation. According to one hospital executive who missed a few issues, "I feel like I'm going through caffeine withdrawal not being able to see the Daily Briefing every day."
The Daily Briefing's small but dynamic team typically works a 6:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. shift, although there is flexibility. Until noon, staff members are on a very tight deadline while composing the day's issue; afternoons are less intense. The associate editor drives the process while working closely with other News Division publications and coordinating with staff from across the firm."

Fellowships and Grants
2012 National Health Journalism Fellowship, The California Endowment
Eligibility: Applicants do not need to be full-time health reporters, but should have a demonstrated interest in health issues and must be based in the U.S.

From the Website: "This program will be especially valuable for journalists interested in topics related to "Health and Place," or how neighborhood and work environments impact health and life expectancy. As part of that exploration, our Fellows will see firsthand how race, ethnicity, and class influence health with trips out in the field from our conference home base, Los Angeles, an international city that has been called a "proving ground" for a multicultural society."
The Dennis A. Hunt Fund for Health Journalism Grant, The California Endowment
Eligibility: Both employed journalists and freelancers are welcome to apply.

From the Website: "The Dennis A. Hunt Fund seeks proposals for stories or multimedia projects that illuminate or expose critical community health or community health policy issues. Proposals can focus on a specific health topic or delve into a confluence of circumstances and conditions that impact health, including environment; social class; crime and violence; urban development; access to health resources or the lack thereof; school absenteeism; transportation or city planning, and and disparities in health."
The Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health Journalism Fund Grant, The California Endowment
Eligibility: Applicants need not be fulltime health reporters, but they need to have a passion for children's health news and receive the bulk of their income from journalism.

From the Website: "Two journalists will be competitively selected as Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health Fellows and will spend five days in Los Angeles as part of the National Health Journalism Fellowship, an intensive professional education program that usually admits about 20 journalists. To encourage journalists and their newsrooms to aim high in reporting on health at a time of scarce resources, the Fellowship offers a reporting grant of between $2,000 and $5,000 to support what is expected to be an ambitious explanatory or investigative reporting project on children's health."
The Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism, The Carter Center
Eligibility: Applicants must have at least three years of experience in print or electronic journalism (writing, reporting, editing, producing, filmmaking).

From the Website: "The Carter Center Mental Health Program in Atlanta, GA provides six one-year fellowships for U.S. journalists to report on a selected topic regarding mental health or mental illnesses. The Fellowships are designed to increase accurate reporting on mental health issues and decrease incorrect, stereotypical information. Each journalist awarded will receive a $10,000 stipend."

Eligibility: You do not need to be an AAJA member to submit an entry.

Casey Medals for Meritorious Journalism, Journalism Center on Children & Families
Eligibility: Did you write, report, produce, shoot, or create a powerful piece of journalism/media in 2011 about the lives of children and families in the U.S?

From the Website: "The awards were created to inspire and recognize exemplary reporting on children and families. Winning stories offer a fresh take on a significant issue, show enterprise in research and reporting and demonstrate masterful storytelling and impact. Judging is conducted by respected journalists and journalism educators."
Ethnic Media Awards for Northern California and the Central Valley, New America Media and KQED
Eligibility: Entries can be print, online or broadcast. All broadcast entries must be under 30 minutes in length.

From the Website: "Recognizing journalistic excellence, NAM invites news organizations (print, online, radio and television) serving Northern California and/or the Central Valley's ethnic minority and newcomer communities, as well as individuals whose work is published or aired by these media outlets, to submit entries published between January 1, 2011 and March 1, 2012. Entries may be in the language of the publication such as English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Arabic or other relevant languages. Participants are encouraged to include their own translations as needed."
The Endocrine Society Award for Excellence in Science and Medical Journalism, The Endocrine Society

Sidney Award, The Sidney Hillman Foundation
Eligibility: The Sidney is awarded monthly to a piece published in a magazine, newspaper, on a news site, or a blog in the United States. Television and radio segments broadcast in the United States are also eligible, as are published photography series.
Deadline: Deadlines are the last Friday of the month in which the piece was published/aired. In the case of magazines, please nominate according to the issue date on the publication, not when it first appeared.

In 2009, the Foundation inaugurated the Sidney, a monthly award for an outstanding piece of socially-conscious journalism.
