Here's what we're checking out today:

HuffPo Health: Orac of the Respectful Insolence blog opines on the new Huffington Post health section, and it's not pretty: "A soon-to-be one-stop shop for quackery."

Infant Mortality: Why do babies in two Sacramento neighborhoods die at twice the rate of the rest of urban California? The Sacramento Bee's Bobby Caina Calvan and Phillip Reese examine what's behind the troubling infant mortality rates.

Medicare: In another great example of health data mining, The Wall St. Journal's Mark Schoofs and Maurice Tamman analyzed the federal government's Medicare claims database and found a New York doctor who may have defrauded the health program. Trouble is, they can't name her.

More Medicare: David Nather's dissection of Medicare's future for the Center for Public Integrity is a must-read for anyone who covers the program.

Health Reform: California this week launches its insurance plan for the medically uninsurable under the new health reform law, reports Victoria Colliver of the San Francisco Chronicle. Delays have made it probably the last plan in the nation to start operating. Jondi Gumz of the Santa Cruz Sentinel profiles one man who could benefit from the plan - but isn't eligible.
