I'm a Los Angeles based podcast producer at NPR, working on Code Switch. I was a 2019 Center for Health Journalism California Fellow. I was previously at KPCC as a health reporter, KQED in San Francisco and moonlit at Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting. I was awarded a Third Coast Prize for Radio Impact and 2019 IRE for Radio, along with Will Evans, for investigating the car factory Tesla and how the company intentionally left their factory workers injuries off government logs. We were also awarded one of the 2018 Sidney Hillman award and finalists for the 2019 Loeb Audio Category Award. I am also a graduate of the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.
When I reached out to LA’s parks and rec department to get their response to the unhealthy snacks and beverages being served to kids, a manager admitted the city had dropped the ball.
Cheetos. Oreos. Capri Sun. That's just a sampling of the items that can be found on the menu every day at city-operated rec centers in Los Angeles, despite a high prevalence of childhood obesity in the county and a nutrition policy that the city adopted in 2005.
State and federal nutritional guidelines exist for public schools, but who's regulating after school programs and child care centers?
