Cecil Egbele is a reporter with the Observer Group Newspapers of Southern California,
Bakersfield and a participant in UC Berkeley’s California Local News Fellowship. She was a 2025 Berkeley
Human Rights Center Fellow, where she researched and brought public attention to the issue of the
psychological trauma of displacement and violence in Nigeria. This past summer, Egbele was an
investigative intern at Bloomberg News, contributing to long-form projects and a data-driven report. She has
served as managing editor and contributing photographer of The Blurb (2024), Berkeley Journalism’s
annual photobook. At Berkeley, she chaired the Society of Professional Journalists chapter and co-founded
the school’s San Quentin Volunteer Program.
