Data pointed me in the right direction. But getting out in the community revealed the struggles people face trying to stay healthy.
Early in the pandemic, Randolph County had the state's highest rate of Covid-19 cases. Going forward, the closest hospital would be at least a half-hour drive across the state line, in Alabama.
That's not just a problem for Randolph County and other rural places where vaccines have been slow to take off. Lagging vaccination rates in rural areas could extend the pandemic for the entire country, according to CDC researchers.
