Updates from the Community: A film festival, fiction and nonfiction and a slew of awards
Here at Career GPS, we spend a lot of time discussing how to make successful careers, but celebrating our successes is just important as working toward our goals. This week, we offer updates and good news from the Center for Health Journalism Digital community.
Andre Blackman's health innovation film festival is on Nov. 1 in Washington, D.C. You can see the program and get tickets at FastForwardHealth.org. His panel proposal for the 2012 South by Southwest Interactive megaconference was also accepted this week. The panel will highlight ideas for digital health that the United States can borrow from developing countries.
Annette Fuentes' book Lockdown High: When the Schoolhouse Becomes a Jailhouse was published in March by Verso. Fuentes was interviewed about the book, which chronicles how we have responded to violence in schools, by Pat Morrison on KPCC. John Harris at The Guardian reviewed Lockdown in context of the British school system.
Andrew Schorr was profiled by Jane Brody in The New York Times about his health care philosophies and his book The Web-Savvy Patient, released earlier this year. Read more about Schorr in a Career GPS post from last year.
Kathleen Sharp's book, Blood Feud: The Man Who Blew the Whistle on One of the Deadliest Prescription Drugs Ever, was published by Dutton in September. Read more about how Sharp parlayed her Health Journalism Fellowship into a book deal.
Anne Marie Ruff's fictional debut Through These Veins, a suspense bio-thriller that chronicles an effort to cure AIDS, was highlighted on Tom Paulson's KPLU Humanosphere blog.
National Health Journalism Fellow Pedro Frisneda (left), health editor at El Diario–La Prensa has won gold in "Outstanding Multiple Article Series Above 30,000 Circulation" category of the 2011 José Martí Publishing Awards from the National Association of Hispanic Publications. You can read his winning fellowship project, "Una vida nueva, pero con diabetes (A new life, but with diabetes)" in Spanish or English.
Health Journalism Fellow Maureen O'Hagan has won two awards from the Association of Food Journalists, one in the category "Best Newspaper Food Story" for her March, 2010 story questioning the safety of raw milk and another in the "Best Feature in a Magazine" category for a September 2010 report on school lunches in The Seattle Times.
Chuleenan Svetvilas, Managing Editor of California Lawyer, has won a Gold Azbee Award from the American Society of Business Publication Editors for her Jan. 2010 feature "Anatomy of a Complaint" about the fight over Prop. 8.
