Funded by a city grant, nine unhoused families at Everett Middle School receive a guaranteed monthly income of $1,000 — part of an experimental program aimed at helping families escape homelessness. “When you're living in poverty day in and day out … you're engaged constantly in fight or flight survival mode,” said Bridget Early, a school counselor. “At some point your brain functions the same as if you haven't slept at all.”This financial aid, the school hopes, will help improve students' mental health and academic performance.
